The meaning of 'ARMS' actually changes from game to game.
WA1: An 'ARM' is a firearm, effectively. Only thoses with the appropriate genetic makeup (such as Rudy or Jane) may use them. ARMS are also the ONLY firearms present in the game. (Though some monsters seem to make use of them.)
WA2: 'ARM' refers to the party's official name. Though firearm use remains rare, there's not much that makes them special (more NPCs and monsters use them than previously).
WA:TV: The 'ARM' is an unusual firearm which requires someone with the appropriate genetic makeup (ala WA1). However, regular firearms are also quite common. Cheyenne's ability to use an ARM, and the power it brings to bear, increases through the series.
WA3: ARMs are again firearms, but there seems to be no genetic requirement. All the main characters have their own, and others appear throughout the game.
WA:FT: Arms are like they are in WA1, almost exactly, with more 'scienfitic' comments about the use of nano-tech in their creation.
WA4: ARMS arm back to like they are in WA1, though this may be considered an 'origin' story for them. The 'genetic requirement' is now given a name, a "Gene Driver". The ARMS in WA4 can be summoned from nannite machines, altered with artifcts, and improve as the characters who use them do. Normal humans can use dangerous drugs to make themselves 'temporary' Gene Drivers as well. The tech is listed as unstable, though, and has rather nasty consequences.
WA5: From what's kwown, a lot of the technical explanation for ARMs is the same as WA4, but with a different origin story.
Hope this helps.
